1st Annual Guam is Good Symposium

The Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation is proud to present the first annual Guam is Good Symposium on Sunday, August 25, 2013 from 1pm to 5pm at the Guam Marriott Resort and Spa. The intention of this event is to inform, inspire, encourage and provide practical advice for surviving cancer, supporting loved ones, and coping with loss and pain. The diverse panels and breakout sessions will address a variety of topics including physical, emotional and art therapy, patient legal issues, and coping with loss. Local participants (to date) include Genny Garrett (mother of Natasha Perez, author of “ Let Go and Let God and inspiration for Natasha’s law), Joyce Sosa, founder of local chapter of Compassionate Friends, Art Therapist Michelle Pier, Family Therapist Rose Camacho, Attorney Michael Flynn, Synergy Studios, Dr. Dennis Borja (Chiropractor), and Physical Therapist Julienne Duenas.

The symposium will also feature keynote speaker Dr. Brad Zebrack, Associate Professor, University of Michigan School of Social Work and member of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Sociobehavioral Program. Brad has been an advocate for the development of peer support group programs for cancer patients, particularly with young adults and adolescents. He is also a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and serves as an advisor for many national organizations providing support to cancer survivors including First Descents, Imerman’s Angels, Triage Cancer and the Children’s National Brain Tumor Foundation.

This event was made possible through a grant from the Guam Cancer Trust Fund, established by Public Law 30-80, which comes from a redirection of 15% of all tobacco sales taxes generated within the Territory to fund under the purview of the University of Guam. As a grant recipient, the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation uses these funds to directly provide support services for Guam cancer patients.

The First Annual Guam is Good Symposium is free and open to interested cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members and supporters. Registration is limited to the first 150 registrants and participants must be at least 14 years of age. Register at the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation office in Hagatna (above Cup and Saucer café).
